After a decent inheritance but failed in-roads into law, religious sects and journalism, CHARLES GUITEAU published a book on law called The Truth (which was almost entirely plagiarized from the work of John Humphrey Noyes). He then turned to politics and awarded himself the credit for President Garfield's Republican nomination in the 1880 presidential campaign. He insisted he should be awarded an ambassadorship for his 'vital' assistance, asking for Vienna, and then deciding that he would rather be posted in Paris. This failed. Guiteau then decided that God had commanded him to kill the then ungrateful President.

Assassinated President James Garfield (July 2, 1881)
